Budgies, also called parakeets sometimes, are these cute little parrots from Australia. They’re super smart and have these really bright colours that make them stand out. People love them because they’re fun and playful, like they’re actually the third most popular pet in the world or something. If you take care of them right, they can live anywhere from like 5 to 12 years, which is pretty decent. Plus, they’re really social and can be awesome pets if you’re into that.
Core Facts & Traits
So budgies are small birds, like 7-8 inches long and weigh around 30-35 grams? That’s tiny! Wild ones are green/yellow, but the pet store ones come in way more colours – blues, whites, even purples. Super cool. They’re also crazy smart – apparently one learned over 1,000 words which is wild for such a small bird. Oh, and fun fact: you can tell males and females apart by looking at the cere (that weird bump above their beak). Males = blue cere, females = tan/brown.
Housing & Environment
Cage needs to be big – like massive. Small cages suck for them. Put different textured perches and toys in there to keep them entertained. They’re social AF so if you’re going to be gone all day, get two so they don’t get lonely. Also, they’re sensitive to smells – no smoking, scented candles, or Teflon pans near them.
Diet & Health
70% of their diet should be pellets (the healthy bird food), then veggies like spinach/broccoli. Seeds are basically junk food so only sometimes. Always have clean water available. Find a bird vet before you need one – they can get respiratory infections and mites and stuff.
Care Tips for Beginners
Taming takes forever but just sit near them and offer treats from your hand. They need like 10-12 hours of sleep (cover their cage at night). Don’t expect cuddles – they prefer sitting on your shoulder or playing with toys.
